Schools in the Dominican Republic: A Parent’s Guide to Cabarete, Sosúa, Las Terrenas and Santo Domingo

For a family moving to the Dominican Republic, the school search often comes before the property search. A home may look ideal on a map, yet the daily journey to school, the language of instruction and the route to a recognized diploma will shape family life for years.

The good news is that families have choices beyond the capital. Cabarete and Sosúa offer English-led and bilingual schools; Las Terrenas has English-led and French-curriculum options; Santo Domingo offers a broader selection of established international programs. The right fit depends on your child’s age, languages, learning needs and likely next move.

Cabarete and Sosúa: international education on the North Coast

The school run is a practical reason to look beyond the name of a town on a property listing. A family living in Cabarete, Encuentro or Sosúa can have very different daily routines depending on the campus and traffic at drop-off time. Visit a school during a normal weekday, then drive the route from a neighborhood you are considering.

International School of Sosúa (ISSOSUA), in Sosúa, offers an English-based program from early childhood through Grade 12, alongside Dominican curriculum requirements such as Spanish and Dominican social studies. The school describes itself as US-accredited. This is an option to examine closely if a family wants a structured, English-led path through high school. Request the current fees, diploma details, admissions requirements and support available for a child joining midyear. School and admissions

ISLA Academy Cabarete, at Playa Laguna, serves Pre-K through Grade 12 with teaching primarily in English and an inquiry-based approach. Its published 2026/27 annual tuition is US$6,600 for preschool/Pre-K–Kinder, US$7,800 for Grades 1–4, US$8,100 for Grades 5–8 and US$8,600 for Grades 9–12. Annual registration adds US$660–860. Basic learning materials and lunch are included; trips, clubs and private tutoring are extra. Students from Grade 1 upward must bring a computer. Ask how its high school credentials align with your child’s future university plans. Program · 2026/27 fee schedule

The School House, in Playa Encuentro, describes a child-centered, English-immersion environment with daily Spanish Language Arts. Its published program includes nursery, preschool, primary and middle school; its middle-school page covers Grades 6–8. The school website displays a US$7,000 annual one-payment tuition option, but families should obtain the relevant grade’s full 2026/27 schedule and confirm what is included. For a teenager approaching the final high-school years, ask specifically about the next step after Grade 8. School website · Middle school

ESD European School, in Bombita between Cabarete and Sosúa, describes a low-screen, bilingual approach with kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels. It publishes no fixed tuition table: pricing depends on grade, enrollment date and payment plan. Ask the school to explain its curriculum, external recognition and the precise diploma route for your child’s year group. School and fee information

Las Terrenas: English-led or French curriculum education

Las Terrenas has a distinctive international community, but the number of schools and upper-school pathways is smaller than in Santo Domingo. This makes curriculum continuity especially important for families with older children.

ISLA Academy Las Terrenas, at Playa Bonita, offers Pre-K through Grade 12, primarily in English. Its published 2026/27 tuition runs from US$5,300 for preschool/Pre-K–Kinder to US$6,600 for Grades 9–12. Annual registration is US$530–660. Basic learning materials are included; trips, clubs, tutoring and a required computer from Grade 1 are separate considerations. Note that the Cabarete and Las Terrenas campuses have different fee schedules. Program · Las Terrenas 2026/27 fees

Lycée Français International de Las Terrenas Théodore-Chassériau offers a French educational route from early childhood through the lycée years. For 2026/27, its published monthly tuition over ten months is US$280 for maternelle, US$350 for elementary, US$450 for collège and US$520 for lycée. That is US$2,800–5,200 in base annual tuition, before a US$480 annual administrative charge and an association membership charged in euros. Its fee sheet also specifies a separate €1,350 annual CNED cost for Première and Terminale, with a special exemption from the administrative fee in those two classes. The school states that its French homologation extends through Seconde; parents of older students should clarify exactly how the final years and qualifications work. For families living around Playa Bonita, Cosón or the center of Las Terrenas, test the school journey at the actual start and end of the school day. A short distance on a map does not tell you how a routine will feel with children, activities and rain.

Santo Domingo: more choice, a different daily rhythm

The capital gives families a broader selection of schools and internationally recognizable senior-school routes. It also makes the location of both home and campus especially consequential for the weekday schedule.

Carol Morgan School, in Bella Vista, offers an American-oriented school environment from Pre-Kinder through high school. The International Baccalaureate organization lists the school as an authorized IB World School since May 2026. Ask the school which diploma pathways and courses are available to your child’s graduating class, as well as for its current grade-specific fees. Admissions · IB school listing

Saint George School, in Piantini, combines a British foundation with Dominican curriculum requirements and offers IGCSE followed by the IB Diploma Programme. Nord Anglia advertises annual fees from US$8,109, a starting figure that does not represent the cost for every age group. Request a written quotation including admission, tuition, transport and examination charges. School and curriculum · Fees-from listing

Santo Domingo can suit a family prioritizing a particular curriculum or subject range. Whether that outweighs a coastal lifestyle is personal; the school visit and the weekday commute are more useful than a general claim that one city has “better” education.

What does school-quality really mean?

A school’s tuition or international name does not, by itself, establish its academic standard. Ask what is independently accredited or officially recognized, which curriculum is taught in each grade, what qualifications students earn, and where recent graduates continued their studies. For younger children, language support, teacher continuity and how the child feels in class may matter more than the eventual diploma. For teenagers, subject availability and transferability become critical.

During a visit, ask to see ordinary lessons and recent student work. Speak to current parents whose children are in the same age group as yours. If a child needs learning support, ask about staff, assessment and available accommodations before paying a nonrefundable registration charge.

Budget for the full school year

A useful comparison uses the same grade, school year and list of inclusions. Request a written breakdown of:

  • Tuition, annual registration and any one-time entrance or association fee;
  • Books, devices, uniforms, meals, transport and after-school activities;
  • Exam fees, additional accreditation or external learning programs in high school;
  • Sibling discounts, payment dates, currency and refund rules;
  • The cost of joining midyear or staying for only one semester.

For instance, ISLA Cabarete’s published Grade 5–8 price totals US$8,910 for 2026/27 tuition and annual registration before extras; its Las Terrenas counterpart totals US$6,820. Those amounts are school-published examples for a particular grade band, not a forecast of every family’s spending. Cabarete fees · Las Terrenas fees

Choose the school, then narrow the property search

Start with two or three school visits and a realistic yearly budget. Ask each school about available places and the transition from your child’s current system. Then explore homes within a school-run radius you would happily drive five days a week. That order often reveals which neighborhoods genuinely fit family life, whether you are drawn to Cabarete’s active coast, a quieter area near Encuentro, Las Terrenas or the capital.

At Hidden Gem Estates, we help buyers explore homes and communities in Cabarete, Sosúa and Las Terrenas. If schools are part of your move, tell us the campus and your preferred daily routine; we can tailor the property search around the places you are considering. School admissions, fees and academic suitability should always be confirmed directly with the school.
